WELCOME

To Topaz Graphix, and the artwork of Staci Jefferson-Brown.

"My chosen medium is pen & ink, and my style is dedicated to creating positive African-American images."

          "Why?"

"While many African-Americans have gained from the struggles and gains of the civil rights era, the struggle is far from over; the war is not yet won -- the Dream still remains that - a Dream.

"It is my sincere hope and desire that my artwork helps -- in some small way -- in keeping that Dream alive. If one person, one child sees my work and is touched, is brought to a new awareness, understanding, or sense of pride through one of my pieces, then I have done just that, and I am satisfied.

"Art is in the eye of the beholder. While I would never presume to dictate what art should be, I do believe that Black artists have a special responsibility. We are the modern griots, the chroniclers and historians of our people and our times. Each of us has a different vision, yet each is but a facet of a single entity, a jewel, if you will.  Art is a gift, a power of spirit, that should not be squandered lightly, but should be used to work a greater good.

"I found myself drawn to black and white, to ink, from the first. Before I ever knew what etchings, or even what pen and ink were, I found myself fascinated by the intricacy and depth achieved by crosshatchings and linework.

"My own work is mostly figurative; however, I find myself less concerned with the delineation of the human form, than with the objects I surround that figure with. Using images from historical research, my purpose is creating art that speaks to you on more than one level. In my view my most successful pieces are of images whose true meanings and form reveal themselves on second or sometimes, third, glance."
